Riyal is the Arabic term for coin and is widely used by printers to describe designs built around circular motifs.
It is a type of Ajrakh printing that is thought to have existed in India for over 4500 years. The riyal print has also been named Jewel box, giving it a super precious vibe.
Our artisan printers in India used an all-natural combination of rust iron and Taramix flower to create the warm hues in this design with 1 hand-carved printing block.
This design dates back to the 16th-century communities in Rajput. The pattern symbolizes the life and identity of the Nomadic Indian communities Gadia Lohar and Banjara.
The bold repeat of the spear/arrow motif is traditional for Godia Lohar, iron workers are known for their fierce defense of their identity and are very skilled makers of the bhala spear. Our highly skilled artisan printers use 3 hand-carved blocks across multiple layers to create the intricate details in this stunning design.
The layered colours in this print stem from these all-natural dyes: Iron, alum alizarin, tamarix flower, lime, acacia tree gum, Indigo, pomegranate and turmeric.

Our skilled artisans have revived this traditional design with custom colors exclusively for Buddhi Threads. Each stunning print is hand-printed using GOTS-certified dyes and four hand-carved blocks across multiple layers.
Kalamkari dates back to the 17th century and can be found in temples and modern homes. The original art form involves around 23 steps and all-natural dyes. Our printer's modern version uses Kalamkari roots as inspiration and is created with GOTS-friendly dyes and organic cotton.
Ahaana means dawn, that quiet time just before the sun breaks. The word itself reminds us of that deep relief we get with a sigh.
This 11th-century design was traditionally used in Gujarat and research has shown that this precious and in-demand print was exported from Gujarat to Egypt and Indonesia during the medieval period.
Our artisan printers in India retrieved this original design from an old textile book, and have revived it with stunning earthy tones, especially for Buddhi Threads

Rust iron with tamarind seed powder lays the foundation. It is then topped with alum solution and finished off with an indigo print.
